FAQ: Hostel Wi-Fi

General

1. I’m a NUS staff or student. Should I use NUS wireless or Wireless@SG?

You should use NUS wireless for better internet access experience. You do not need to VPN to NUS for accessing NUS internal resources if you are using NUS wireless, unlike Wireless@SG.

2. Who can use the NUS wireless?

NUS wireless network is opened to all NUS staff and students who are holding valid NUS-ID accounts.

3. Where are the areas in the residences and halls that cover by NUS and Wireless@SG signal?

The NUS wireless and Wireless@SG will eventually cover the following areas:

Rooms/Apartments (Students/Master/Fellow)

Corridors

Pantry areas and kitchens

Lounge areas

Reception, lobby and foyer areas

Communal halls and multipurpose halls

Dining halls

Meeting rooms and study rooms

Gymnasiums

The NUS wireless and Wireless@SG will cover on a best effort only in the following areas:

Lift lobbies

Staircases

Laundry rooms

Linkways

Rooftops

Bathrooms and toilets

4. What is the download and upload speeds I can expect from NUS wireless network?

Generally, you should be getting download and upload speeds of at least 10Mbps.

5. Do I need to pay for using the NUS wireless?

No, there will not be a service fee which you need to pay for NUS wireless service.

6. Which student residences or hostels will be covered by NUS wireless and Wireless@SG?

NUS Wireless will cover the student residences and hostels listed below:

Ridge View Residence

Eusoff Hall

Temasek Hall

Kent Ridge Hall

Sheares Hall

7. I do not find any NUS wireless or Wireless@SG signal within my residence or hostel. Why is this so?

The wireless setup may still be in progress for your residence or hostel yet as NUS IT is implementing the wireless coverage for residences and hostels in phases from 2 April 2018 to 14 January 2019. Check out the schedule here.

8. Why am I not allowed to connect my own Wireless Access Point?

  1. This is against NUS Network Policy as these unauthorized extensions or setup are perilous to network security as it opens up the wired LAN to unauthorized access over the airwaves.
  2. Self-installed wireless access points make networking difficult when the use of the airspace is uncoordinated within the campus. Individual schools or users deploying their own wireless access points can jeopardize the integrity and performance of the campus-wide authenticated wireless network.

9. Which wireless card is recommended when using the NUS wireless or Wireless@SG?

Any WiFi wireless LAN Card that supports 802.11a/g/n and 802.11ac should be able to connect to NUS wireless or Wireless@SG.

10. Is it alright if I keep my computer on and connected to the NUS wireless or Wireless@SG 24-hours a day?

We do not encourage this as leaving your computer always on and active on the network leaves you more vulnerable to attacks by hackers and virus infection/intrusion. It also draws the attention of potential hackers thereby exposing your computer to unnecessary security risks. Our advice is to switch off your computer when it is not being used.

Troubleshooting

1. My built-in wireless LAN adapter does not work on NUS wireless or Wireless@SG. Why is this so?

Please update the latest drivers for your built-in wireless LAN adapter. These drivers are usually available for download from your laptop manufacturer website.

2. I encountered the error "Limited or no connectivity", what can be done?

This message can result from several different combinations of errors and configuration problems. The message is received when there is no proper connectivity to the wireless network due to the possible reasons below:

Unable to obtain IP addresses on the wireless card. Verify that the card is set to obtain IP address automatically. Verify the IP address obtained are correct from the steps shown earlier in this section.

Insufficient wireless coverage at the location. Weak signals could result in intermittent connectivity and trigger this error message. Observe the signal strength indicator reported on the wireless card. If possible move to a location with greater strength.

1. Can my guest enjoy free internet service in NUS?

You will be pleased to know that your guest can now enjoy free internet access via Wireless@SG simply by logging to the SSID below:

2. What is the difference between Wireless@SG and Wireless@SGx?

The Wireless@SGx is using SIM-based authentication which allows a user to log in automatically without the need for username and password after an initial one-time setup. Wireless@SG requires users to log in via a browser every time. In addition, the Wireless@SGx network is more secure as it uses industry-based authentication and security standards (i.e. IEEE 802.1x and Wi-Fi Alliance), and data sent over Wireless@SGx network is encrypted.

3. How can public or guest enjoy the Wireless@SG services?

For public or guest with existing Wireless@SG app installed on their mobile, they can connect to Wireless@SG wireless seamlessly.

For public or guest logging to Wireless@SG for the first time, download Wireless@SG app from Apple Store or Google Play to get connect with Wireless@SG.

4. How do I connect to Wireless@SG?

For visitors and supported devices (Android, iOS, Windows 7 and above):

    1. Download and install the Wireless@SG app from Apple Store or Google Play.
    2. Select “Setup” from the main drop-down menu.
    3. Select your mobile operator and enter your identification and mobile numbers.
    4. A one-time pin will be sent to the registered mobile number. Enter the one-time pin to connect to Wireless@SG.

For foreign visitors and non-supported devices:

      1. Locate a Wireless@SG hotspot and sign in with your mobile number.
      2. Enter your mobile number and verification code indicated on the screen.
      3. A one-time pin will be sent to the registered mobile number. Enter the one-time pin to connect to Wireless@SG.

5. Is the Wireless@SG app compatible with my device?

Here is the list of supported device OS:

6. Where can I find more information about Wireless@SG service?

7. Is Wireless@SG service available free of charge?

Yes, Wireless@SG service is FREE until further notice.

8. If my device is currently connected to 3G or 4G and my WiFi is on, will it be switched to Wireless@SG when I am within the coverage area?

Yes, your device will automatically connect to Wireless@SG.

9. Why I can’t access to NUS internal resources using Wireless@SG?

Wireless@SG network is outside of NUS network similar to home or public internet. In order to access NUS internal resources using Wireless@SG, you may need to establish NUS VPN connection before accessing NUS internal resources.

10. What is the download and upload speed generally I will be getting from Wireless@SG?

You should be getting generally at least 5Mbps download and upload speed from Wireless@SG.

11. I’m having technical issue to connect to NUS wireless or Wireless@SG in my residence or hostel. How can I contact for technical support?
