MFA for Students
What is Microsoft Multifactor Authentication (MFA)?
With increasing cyber threats, using your ID with a password to access services is no longer sufficient. To mitigate this risk, we will be implementing Microsoft Multifactor Authentication (MFA) for all students’ NUS-ID accounts.
MFA provides an additional layer of security by ensuring that you’re the only person who can access your account, even if your password has been compromised. MFA will be required for access to Zoom and Microsoft 365 services, including email, Teams, and SharePoint. For now, applications such as myEduRec and Canvas will not require MFA. However, we will progressively enhance them to enable MFA for more secured access.
What benefits does MFA offer?
Use the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device to verify your identity. | You will be prompted for MFA upon first setup of apps (e.g. Outlook, Teams). As long as you continue to use these apps regularly on your device, you won’t be prompted for MFA. | The Microsoft Authenticator app assesses the risk of your login. If the login is of high risk, you will be prompted to verify your identity via the app. |
What do I need to do?
1. MFA will be rolled out in batches to all students from February to July 2024. | 2. You will receive an email from NUS IT MFA Rollout (nusitmfarollout@nus.edu.sg) with instructions to set up MFA. You will need to complete the MFA setup within 21 days. | 3. After the deadline, you will be prompted for MFA when you access the services mentioned above. Simply go to your Microsoft Authenticator app to verify and approve the request. |
If you do not take any action after 21 days, you will be prompted to set up MFA upon your next login to Zoom or M365 services – please do not ignore or skip this step as you will not be able to gain access to the services until you have completed the MFA setup.
MFA Rollout Schedule
MFA will be rolled out to students in batches from February to July 2024. We will not carry out any MFA rollout during the exam period (April 2024).
