NUSNET6 - FAQs

General

The upgrade covers the entire campus network infrastructure for enhanced security and performance. The upgrade starts with backbone network devices, followed by access switches and wireless access points in each building.

We will also be upgrading the campus wireless network to support Wi-Fi 6, providing faster and more reliable wireless performance.

The upgrade will be progressively implemented across the campus from 2020 through 2022. Please refer to the schedule here.

Yes, we will inform each department of the scheduled change and upgrade activities in advance. This is to minimise the service disruption and transition you smoothly to the new network.

Accessing the campus network

You may access the wireless network as per usual.

To access the wired network, you may need to configure your wired devices. The campus network requires all computers or devices to be authenticated. The authentication can be achieved via user login or system network address registration in the central database.

To prevent unauthorised access and improve network security, we will be performing network configuration changes to your department’s PCs, servers and other wired-connected devices.

For NUS domain-joined Windows machine, you do not need to do anything. The network authentication will be enabled automatically.

For non-domain joined Windows machine, refer to this link on how to configure your computer.

For your Mac or Linux computers, refer to this link on how to configure your computer.

If you require further assistance, please contact the Project Team (nusnet6@nus.edu.sg or 6516 2484).

Provide the device’s MAC address and IP address to IT Care (itcare@nus.edu.sg or 6516 2080). We will then perform a backend configuration. Once this is completed, you may connect your device to the campus network.

We will contact each department administrator to facilitate the transition of fixed IP address devices. Following the new security framework laid out in the new network, there may be a need to change the IP address for network authentication or configuration.

Provide the MAC address and IP address of the old and new devices to IT Care (itcare@nus.edu.sg or 6516 2080). We will then perform a backend configuration. Once this is completed, you may connect your device to the campus network.

For security purpose, each campus network point only allows one device to connect. If you need to connect multiple devices to the campus network, please use separate network points, or contact us via IT Care (itcare@nus.edu.sg or 6516 2080) so that we can advise you accordingly.

Connect the shared computer to the NUS network. You can then log in to the shared computer with your NUSNET credentials.

NUSOneClick will update the 802.1x configuration on your wired network adapter to prepare your Windows computers for authentication to connect to the upgraded network. No other changes will be made.

Please contact IT Care for further assistance if the installation is unsuccessful.

Troubleshooting

Please power-cycle your computer or device to resume the network connection. Some computers or devices require a reboot after the network switch change.

During the upgrade, there is a change of IP address on your computer. Hence, if you are performing RDP via IP address, please check and use your computer’s new IP address.

Refer to the link below on how to configure and use the computer name to connect your desktop remotely:

If you require further assistance, please IT Care (itcare@nus.edu.sg or call 6516 2080).

We have enhanced the network security in the upgrade. Computers connected to the wired network will undergo an authentication process during start-up. This authentication process takes place in the background while the computer starts up, thus you may experience a slower boot up as compared to the former network.
