Serious vulnerability in Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox browsers (Sep 2023)

What has happened?

Google and Mozilla have reported a serious security vulnerability with Chrome and Firefox browsers respectively. The vulnerability is being actively exploited by cyber attackers and could potentially lead to system compromise and data loss/leakage.

Which versions of Chrome and Firefox browsers are affected?
Browser Affected Versions
Google Chrome Earlier than 116.0.5845.188 – For Windows

Earlier than 116.0.5845.187 – For macOS and Linux

Mozilla Firefox Earlier than 117.0.1 – For both Windows and macOS
What do I need to do?

Check and ensure you have the latest version of Chrome or Firefox browser installed. If not, update it immediately to the latest version by following the instructions below:

For Google Chrome:

  1. Check your browser version via Menu [] -> Help -> About Google Chrome.
  2. Select Update Google Chrome.
  3. Restart your browser to complete the update.

For Mozilla Firefox:

  1. Check your browser version via Menu [] -> Help -> About Firefox.
  2. Firefox will check automatically for updates and download it immediately.
  3. When the download is completed, click Restart to update Firefox.
