We understood the need for a future-ready IT workforce – one that possesses the competencies and capabilities to meet every challenge in the coming years and upholds NUS’ prominence as a global university.
We live out our values to be agile, innovative, and to always push boundaries, and we know we can only do that if we have the right skills, experience and knowledge.
Studying our IT organisation with the future in mind, we developed, from scratch – 4 career paths for NUS IT – namely Transversal, Managerial, Specialist and Leadership tracks, clearly outlining the ladders of career growth and opportunities for everyone. We curated the job roles and titles and made them meaningful, inspiring, intuitive and to better reflect their job scope.
With that as our “building bricks”, we developed a full fledge competency framework that embodied all the skills needed for the whole IT institution. Drawing from the SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG)’s comprehensive Skills Framework, NUS IT created over 200 functional, core (general) and technical skills, with each having up to 6 levels of competency definitions. This granularity was necessary to differentiate the skill levels needed for different grades, and only with that could we then perform the Competency Assessment Exercise (CASE) with the highest accuracy, despite it being still “an art”.
Moving ahead, with insights into our capabilities and where we are lacking, we could then arm every NUS IT staff with a comprehensive training plan, up-levelling the department’s overall proficiency in every aspect. With that, we would also know where our black belts for each skill type were, so we could remain agile and quickly find the right resources to fulfil all our business needs.
We are heartened to have led the IT competency framework thus far, valiantly achieving the targets for talent acquisition, retention and development.
