Here, we highlight some of the key data analytics projects completed in 2022. These projects showcase how we have collected data from reliable and varied sources and transformed them into useful information to enable us to glean insights that support better decision-making to address real-life challenges.
Much data engineering effort had been invested to make these data analytics projects possible.
Data Analytics Projects
ALSET Data Lake
Objectives & Outcome
It provides anonymised institutional and research-collected data from various sources such as IT systems, student surveys, research study results, etc. for educational research.
To date, it is utilised by 64 research projects, and has generated 16 articles & conference presentations.
Data Engineering Effort Involved
In collaboration with ALSET, NUS IT had:
- Built end-to-end anonymised data pipeline to power research works
- Provided enterprise infrastructure, tools and secure workstations
Social Mobility
Objectives & Outcome
It enables NUS to analyse the correlation between an applicant's family social economics background with the admission application, offer and acceptance.
Research Talent
Objectives & Outcome
It allows NUS to recruit the best possible academic talents using research impact identified from the research talent pool.
To date, it has amassed more than 30,000 authors and 260,000 publication records from 7 top universities.
NUS Perceptions
Objectives & Outcome
It enables NUS to access up-to-date NUS-related mentions in media, and respond in a timely fashion.
Data Engineering Effort Involved
In collaboration with NUS Office of Data and Intelligence (ODI), NUS IT had:
- Built an end-to-end data pipeline in a fully automated way to power Machine Learning (ML) models and dashboards.
- Transferred complex data modelling and data wrangling logic out of ODI through simplifying ML model and dashboard built by data scientists.
- Provided enterprise infrastructure and tools
- Provided advisory and guidance to ODI to tune / redevelop prototype dashboards into production-ready ones.
Student Analytics Phase 2
Objectives & Outcome
We can now analyse financial aid, scholarship, internship supply & demand, career catalyst effectiveness and graduate employment outcome.

This had been fully managed end-to-end by NUS IT.
